The Lion Bites

This is a wargame scenario for a possible 'what if' in 1806. The army of Ali Pasha is somewhat conjectual as no order of battle exists. The orbats are in the format for  the Napoleonic Principles of War rules, but could be adapted for other systems.  The terrain is rugged, dominated by high hills and we used a modified version of the terrain rules in Principles of War.

In the refight at Glasgow and District Wargaming Society the forces of Ali Pasha triumphed.

British Briefing

The year is 1806. Napoleon is trouncing the Prussians at Jena/Auerstadt and the Russians prepare to support their Prussian allies. In the Adriatic the French have occupied Venetian territory but off the Greek coast have lost key areas such as Corfu and the town of Parga. These are garrisoned by Russian troops supported by the British fleet. The Ottoman governor is the legendary and semi-autonomous Ali Pasha of Jannina (known as Arslan - The Lion). He has long sought Parga and now sees an opportunity whilst the Russians are busy elsewhere. With French support from Dalmatia he besieges Parga.

You are General Sir Samuel Auchmuty you have been dispatched with three brigades to relieve the Russian garrison at Parga. On landing the Turks abandon the siege and you advance out of the town with a Russian brigade. Your objective is a short punitive strike at the Pasha's forces.

The Russian's advise that the Pasha's forces consist of his own 'Brigade' of mostly Albanian light troops and cavalry together with his beloved heavy guns. A French brigade, a light French trained Greek brigade and a typical Ottoman cavalry 'brigade'. You are confident that your well trained troops and stoic Russians are more than a match for the semi-trained and irregular rabble in front of you.
